Our history of supporting our friends’ food + beverage brands establish themselves through our space is taking a whole different approach…
Throughout the course of our existence as a brand since 2020, we’ve been keen on providing a space where some of our close industry friends can hash out and further develop their concepts. We’re happy to say that everybody who’s somehow collaborated w/ us via a pop-up has gone on to bigger things (ie: Mariscos Tone Camarón / Relic Bakery + Kitchen / Wildflour / Damiana / Diego Hernández Restaurant / La Carmelita), one of which has actually reached the upper echelons of the culinary world w/ a Michelin Star (Chef Esteban Lluis of Damiana in Valle de Guadalupe). Let it be known that we are by no means taking credit for our friend’s successes, we’re just stoked to have been a part of their journey during their early phases. We are stoked to continue this tradition of being more than just a space that means so much to us and open our doors for other friends to incubate their concepts in hopes that this will be the springboard that helps them take the next steps towards making their dreams into a reality.
On a recent jaunt to San Francisco this past May, I was inspired by what our friends at side a + HI NRG SF were doing with their spaces/concepts. Side A for example (shoutout Caroline + co!) is a badass restaurant w/ a dope HiFi system that opens only for dinner service (Thurs-Mon). Side A opens their doors to the very popular SF café, The Coffee Movement, to service the space Mon-Fri from 8a-1p. An opportunity to bring a solid café to a different neighborhood that appreciates the offerings. On the other hand, we have HI NRG, a tremendous coffee concept that incorporates vinyl sounds, operated by the homies “LG + NK,” the work they are doing is truly inspiring not only via their lattes are but also w/ their active Substack and global collabs w/ roasters like DAK Coffee out of Amsterdam. Much like TCM x SIDE A, HI NRG is working w/ SF wine bar, High Treason (open daily from 4p-close), during the hours which the space is vacant. Can you see where we’re going w/ this???
Whilst sipping my double anaerobic thermal shock “Dragonfruit Spritz”coffee (shoutout roaster Diego Bermudez of Native in Colombia) at TCM x SIDE A on a sunny San Francisco May morning, listening to LG from HI NRG drop a dreamy balearic set, my brain started thinking: “why the f*ck am I not doing something w/ Lp during the days in which we are not open…” Let’s just say that the seed was planted… Upon returning to San Diego on the short flight, I reached out to my homie and longtime Lp regular, David who also happens to be the founder/owner of bar (at night), a San Diego born “beer café” w/ big dreams. David is a “beer head,” w/ extensive knowledge on the foamy elixir that is cerveza. David and I have always connected over beer w/ our palates being very similar in terms of always seeking out the goods from and inspired by the old world. Throughout the course of 2024, I had discussed the bar (at night) concept w/ David over pour overs at Lp and over beers/coffee outside the shop. David + bar (at night) were by no means staying inactive, they successfully organized two pop-ups that were huge affirmations that they were on the right path.
We hadn’t quite landed on something that made sense for us until coming back from the SF trip in May. For this is have to say GRACIAS for the inspiration to the SF homies Side A, The Coffee Movement and HI NRG, truly thank you fam (also shout out Jeremy + Eug of Sf institution Bar Part Time aka the OGs)! From May up until last week, we’ve been slowly hashing out the details of how a multi-use space could be sustainable for both parties, w/ the goal being for us to co-develop a business model that we could offer to other aspiring concepts that are a good fit for us. Seeing Lp as a sort of “incubator” as well was an idea that resonated well with both of us. We’re happy to finally bring this to life w/ the first edition of bar (at night) @ Lp w/ a monthly Monday night pop-up that will hopefully evolve into a bi-monthly happening. For the first edition, yours truly will be supplying the soundtrack for the evening alongside some friends. To further celebrate the occasion, we invited David to curate a playlist for us for our “not vinyl” series in addition to inviting him in for a chat which we’ll be dropping this week on our podcast that will be sent out to everybody via here (Substack).
